So, Sara left yesterday, after a lovely few days staying over at mine. So in traditional style I went to the pub, with Neil. Neil is what I would term a 'top bloke'. More left-wing than me, and he works for BBC Parliament (covering the Lords, though). He knows lots about politics, but I can just about keep up to discuss things with him.
Things like his support of Irvine because of the Freedom of Information bill that was scuppered, whereas I dislike him for never publicly making a fuss about his beliefs. His belief that Blunkett is on his way to the Home Office. Our mutual disappointment in the small ginger shrew for sponsoring America's annual Cuba-bash at the UN (and admiration for Peter Hain for his comments about the Saudis).
And most of all, his assertion that Brown's recent debt paying puts him in a very strong position amongst the G7 in calling for a massive write-off of third world debt. Not a theory I'd heard before, but pretty heart-warming. I'm really warming to the dour Scot, I have to say. He is incredibly politically astute as well as ultimately seeming to have his heart in the right place.
Happy Birthday.
